Howard Zinn was one of the most influential historians and activists of the 20th and 21st centuries. His work, which focused on the history of the working class, the civil rights movement, and the anti-war movement, has inspired generations of activists and scholars.

Howard Zinn Speaks: Collected Speeches 1963-2009 brings together over 50 of Zinn's most important speeches, from his early days as a civil rights activist to his later years as a renowned historian and public intellectual. These speeches offer a unique insight into Zinn's thought and activism, and provide a valuable resource for anyone interested in the history of social movements in the United States.

Zinn was born in New York City in 1922 to Jewish immigrant parents. He grew up in a working-class neighborhood, and his early experiences of poverty and inequality had a profound impact on his later work. After serving in the Army Air Forces during World War II, Zinn earned a Ph.D. in history from Columbia University.

In the early 1960s, Zinn became involved in the civil rights movement. He participated in the Freedom Rides, and he wrote a book about the movement, SNCC: The New Abolitionists. Zinn's activism often brought him into conflict with the authorities. In 1968, he was fired from his teaching position at Boston University after he refused to sign a loyalty oath.

Despite being fired from Boston University, Zinn continued to write and teach. He published his most famous work, A People's History of the United States, in 1980. This book, which has sold over two million copies, offers a revisionist history of the United States that focuses on the experiences of ordinary people rather than the powerful.

Zinn's historical work has been praised for its clarity, its rigor, and its ability to inspire readers to become more engaged in social justice issues. His work has also been criticized for being too one-sided and for downplaying the role of violence in American history.

In his later years, Zinn continued to be an active voice for social justice. He spoke out against the Vietnam War, the Iraq War, and the rise of neoliberalism. He also supported the Occupy Wall Street movement and the Black Lives Matter movement.

Zinn died in 2010 at the age of 87. He left behind a legacy of activism and scholarship that continues to inspire people around the world.
